Paracetamol
Indications/Uses
Relief of fever & mild to moderate pain eg, headache, migraine, toothache, neuralgia, pain after dental procedures & vaccination; muscular aches, joint, OA, rheumatic & period pain; sore throat, discomfort from colds & flu.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 2 tab every 6-8 hr. Max: 6 tab in 24 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if severe skin reactions occur. Patients w/ depleted glutathione levels eg, severely malnourished, anorexic, w/ low BMI or chronic alcohol heavy users; sepsis. Not to be used w/ other paracetamol-containing medicines. Underlying hepatic disease; hepatic & renal impairment. Not recommended in childn <12 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Shortness of breath; wheezing/difficulty breathing; swelling of face, lips, tongue or other body parts; rash, peeling, itching or hives on skin or mouth ulcers; unexplained bruising/bleeding. Cutaneous hypersensitivity reactions eg, skin rashes, angioedema, SJS/TEN.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced anticoagulant effect of warfarin & other coumarins. Increased absorption by drugs increasing gastric emptying eg, metoclopramide. Decreased absorption by drugs decreasing gastric emptying eg, propantheline, antidepressants w/ anticholinergic properties, narcotic analgesics. Increased chloramphenicol conc. Increased toxicity w/ hepatotoxic drugs or liver microsomal enzyme inducers eg, alcohol, anticonvulsants. Affected excretion & altered plasma conc w/ probenecid. Reduced absorption w/ cholestyramine.
